Russian S-400 to deploy by year-end

Article Abstract:

Russia's S-400 Trumph high-altitude long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) is expected to be deployed before the end of 2000. The SAM system, which will still undergo acceptance tests, will be issued to a military unit outside of Moscow, Russia. The S-400, which is capable of intercepting targets ranging from 1-400 kms at altitudes ranging from 5-30 kms, is considered as Russia's primary air-defense weapon until the year 2020.

Article Abstract:

Russia has developed its air-superiority fighter, Su-27 Flanker, into a whole family of combat aircraft. The development runs along four lines which are interdependent with each other. The four lines are the base Su- 26 and Su-30 aircraft for production and export; the modern, multi-role Su-35 fightert and its two-seat version the Su-30 MK; the shipborne Su-33 and Su-33; and the Su-34 strike aircraft.

Article Abstract:

Russia's Su-27K shipborne air-superiority fighter program has been used as a platform to produce several derivatives, including the Su-33 and the Su- 27IB, or the strike `flanker.' Retaining the armament of Su-27, the Su-33 is intended for attacking air targets flying at very low altitude ablve the water using a set of air-to-air missiles with an extended special naval missile called the R-27EM. The strike flanker, the most significant departure from the prototype Su-27, is designed to destroy ground targets, with air targets as the No. 2 objective.
